Air India has been revealed as the mysterious carrier behind the order of 85 new Airbus Jets including 75 A320-family jets and 10 long-haul A350s . This follows a landmark order of Airbus and Boeing planes made last year.

Airbus order and delivery report

In its latest report on Wednesday, Airbus announced that it had received 235 orders, including 75 A320-family jets and 10 long-haul A350s purchased by an undisclosed buyer. The report was published before Tata Group announced the death of its former chairman, Ratan Tata at age 86. Ratan Tata was a key figure in the Tata Group, serving as chairman for more than 20 years.

Sources suspected Air India Ltd. to be behind the order. One source claiming that there are also talks for a potential Boeing top-up order in progress. Both Air India and Airbus declined to comment on the details of the deal.

Expansion plans

Air India is expanding as part of its plan to gain a larger share of India’s market and keep up with growing competition in the airline industry. This is part of a wider overhaul plan. Following its merger with Vistara and Singapore Airlines, the company has been seen to modify and create more premium aircrafts. Ratan Tata, former chairperson of the Tata Group commented:

While admittedly it will take considerable effort to rebuild Air India, it will hopefully provide a very strong market opportunity to the Tata Group’s presence in the aviation industry.

The purchase of long-haul A350s is set to increase Air India’s presence in international markets, while its order of A320 family jets will be used on local routes. This order was placed on top of a historical 470 jet order of Airbus and Boeing aircraft in February 2023—further cementing Air India’s commitment to refine and improve the airline.
