Over 30,000 Boeing factory workers have embarked on strike after rejecting an agreement between their union representatives and the company. Boeing’s proposal included a 25% pay increase over four years, a reduction in employees’ healthcare costs, higher contributions from the company, and a $3,000 bonus for contract approval.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) reported that 94.6% of its members voted against the contract, with 96% favouring going on strike. The union had been aiming for a 40% wage increase among several other employment benefits.

In a social media post, IAM District 751 president Jon Holden said “workers have spoken loud and clear,” adding that the strike was about addressing the past and future of employees.

Responding, Boeing said it was “ready to get back to the table to reach a new agreement.”

In a statement to Travel Radar, Boeing Aerospace said:

“The message was clear that the tentative agreement we reached with IAM leadership was not acceptable to the members. We remain committed to resetting our relationship with our employees and the union.”

Setback for Boeing Production

Travel Radar recalls that the US plane manufacturer faced difficulties recovering after the deadly 737 Max crashes in 2018 and 2019, which claimed 346 lives. Again, the recent strike has affected the production of Boeing’s 737 Max.

In January, a mid-flight door plug failure on a 737 Max raised fresh concerns about the company’s safety practices, leading aviation regulators to limit aircraft production.

Boeing posted a $1.4 billion loss for the April-June quarter, after a $355 million net loss in the 2024 first quarter. The plane maker’s last reported profit was $160 million in the second quarter of 2022.
