IndiGo, India’s largest airline is cooperating with the civil aviation ministry to extend the lease of two Boeing 777 aircraft which currently operate between Delhi, Mumbai and Istanbul. Initially, leased from Turkish Airlines, these aircraft depict IndiGo’s only wide-body aircraft indicating a strategic move beyond the airline’s traditional dependence on narrow-body Airbus planes.

The airline’s first Boeing 777 began flying the Delhi-Istanbul route on February 1, 2023 and a second on the Mumbai-Istanbul route in mid-May. With the initial lease ending on November 14, IndiGo aims to prolong this lease as part of a broader strategy to meet international travel needs and increase its footprint on long-haul routes.

Capacity challenges and fleet limitations

One of the main motivations behind IndiGo’s wet lease arrangement is the airline’s ongoing struggle with grounded aircraft. Following issues with Prat and Whitney engines, IndiGo has faced important capacity constraints with dozens of planes temporarily out of service. Although these numbers have dropped from the high 60s to the mid-70s, IndiGo’s capacity issues are still challenging.

The airline has already implemented measures to adapt, including placing a substantial order for 30 Airbus A350-900 aircraft in May. In the meantime, IndiGo hopes to maintain its two Boeing 777s to meet short capacity needs since they offer greater seating capacity with 400 seats in a dual-class configuration with 24 business and 376 economy seats.

IndiGo’s international flights

In case the ministry does not grant an extension for the Boeing 777 lease IndiGo plans to revert to A321 planes on the Istanbul routes, a move that may impact seat availability and travel costs to passengers. IndiGo’s CEO, Pieter Elbers, has expressed that wide-body planes not only enhance route capacity but also keep fares affordable, a crucial factor as competition intensifies among international carriers.

With a fleet including more than 400 aircraft, IndiGo’s expansion into wide-body operations marks a new chapter for India’s leading airline, that aims at boosting its position in the global aviation market. As the lease extension is still under discussion, IndiGo’s capacity to keep up with the rising demand for international travel remains uncertain.
