Iceland’s newest low-cost carrier PLAY announced service to New York Stewart International Airport, with the first flight set to depart on June 9. PLAY will be the first to use the airport’s new international arrivals facility.

New York Stewart: International Arrival

The new international arrivals facility at New York Stewart International Airport will welcome PLAY’s inaugural flight from Keflavík International Airport (KEF) on June 9 and will be operated daily.

“The addition of PLAY’s international service is important in realizing our post-pandemic vision for New York Stewart as a leading regional provider of both international and domestic air service and as a generator of strong economic growth.” – Rick Cotton, Executive Director, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey

New York Stewart International Airport’s brand new $37 million, 20,000 square foot international arrivals facility will welcome PLAY as the first airline to use the facility.

The airport was chosen because of the significantly lower operating costs compared to other airports in New York, as well as its convenient location close to attractions. Positioning PLAY at New York Stewart International Airport allows the airline to offer lower fares between New York and Europe.

Additionally, less traffic will mean that the aircraft will spend less time taxiing on the ground and in holding patterns, in turn saving money on fuel and operating expenses.

“This decision enables us to offer the lowest prices on flights between New York and Europe as we get a good deal being the first airline operating international flights from the airport. Passengers traveling through New York Stewart have many comfortable transportation options from the airport to all directions, not to mention how friendly and efficient it is to use for our passengers.” – Bigir Jónsson, CEO, PLAY

PLAY Network Growth

While still relatively new to the scene, PLAY has been expanding in the U.S. and Europe rapidly since its launch in early 2021. In 2022, the airline will operate flights to 25 destinations across Europe and the U.S., rounding out its fleet with six new Airbus A320neo and A321neo aircraft this summer.

The fuel-efficient A320 family aligns with PLAY and will be a strategic part of the airline’s growth plan with its long and short-range flexibility.

In addition to launching service to New York, PLAY will also begin flying to Baltimore/Washington in April and Boston in May. Transatlantic flights are a critical part of PLAY’s business model.
